We commend Huang et al.1 for their study on using ChatGPT to predict glaucoma, which shows the great potential of large language models (LLMs) in disease prediction. Recently, there has been an increase in such research2 . As social science researchers studying medical AI, we want to take a step back in the discussion of this issue: Why can LLMs predict diseases? Are their results reliable for doctors and patients? To dicuss this, we need to examine LLMs' data sources and technical logic.
