Editor, Non-glaucomatous optic nerve damage can result from a variety of causes, including neurological disorders that affect the optic nerve or optic tract, ocular diseases such as retinal vessel occlusions, and systemic disorders such as diabetes mellitus. Because some of these causes are associated with increased risk for mortality, it was the purpose of the present investigation to assess whether mortality risk is associated with the presence of ophthalmoscopically detected nonglaucomatous optic nerve damage.
