Effect of intravitreal cell-based produced glucagon-like peptide-1 on Bcl and BAX expression in the optic nerve crush model

Editor, P revious studies have shown that the vitreous cavity not only can serve as drug reservoir for intravitreal application of medicaments but also serve as a production site for drugs (Tao et al. 2002; Sieving et al. 2006; Zhang et al. 2010, 2011). A recent study examined the effect of intravitreally produced glucagon-like peptide on the count of retinal ganglion cells in rats with an experimental optic nerve crush (Zhang et al. 2011). The survival rate was significantly higher in the study group than in control groups (Zhang et al. 2011). To further examine the potentially neuroprotective effect of GLP-1 produced by intravitreally implanted cells, we performed this study and examined the upregulation or downregulation of the proapoptotic gene BAX and the antiapoptotic gene Bcl-2 in the experimental optic nerve crush model.
