In order to discuss the relationship between the etiology of sarcoidosis and the inhaled dust particles components, we collected 50 cases of sarcoidosis and 6 cases of silicosis samples. The samples were observed using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, Warthin - Starry (WS) stains, immunohistochemistry staining (IHC) staining, transmission of electron microscope (TEM), and as well as x-ray spectrum chemical element analysis (X-RSA). The dust particles mainly containing silicon as the main chemical element were present in the epitheliod cells and the multinucleated giant cells in all samples of both diseases. The dust particles and the pathological changes of the two diseases are essentially similar, but with only quantitative differences. We hypothesized that most patients with sarcoidosis probably resulted from a reaction to a low quantity of inhaled silicon dusts particles during the paraoccupational settings.
